Hello guys!
We are glad to show our experiment with fully automated adding of Expression elements into Vocaloid singing, using our Performance Modeling technology. For the first example we used special PMStyle (Onyx Arranger 2.1), which has done the following automatically:
1) Appointed Velocity, according to phrase division.
2) Made the notes sound legato within the phrases and inserted the pauses between the phrases
3) Generated ALL Pitch Wheel sendings (curve), providing microdeviations, gliding, bending, pitch ornaments and Vibrato.
No manual editing at all! You can find more details at JMT site.

Good luck with the project. I think your first testing of the technology sounds pretty promising and what Vocaloid is crying out for is a method of automating the functions in this way. When do you expect to get a fully functional version on the road?

Yes indeed, good luck with the expression elements. I listened to your demos and I couldn’t understand a single word, it’s still mostly un-intelligable <img class=” />

I can see where this could help with the time involved in a vocal. Now if it could also make the vocal sound better!! Good luck with this.

I agree with Quetzalcoatl about not being able to understand a single word. Even when I looked at the lyric sheet, it was difficult to make out the words. Also, the tonality of Leon here sounded more like a vocoder used to make something like a sax-flavored synth sound speak than a true human voice.

That said, I think the concept of trying to deal with the inflections automatically is at least interesting, and I have seen how the NTONYX Style Enhancer can improve the realism of MIDI tracks for other instruments.

I wonder, though, how well that could be applied to actual singing. The thing is singing is more than just doing different things at starts and ends of phrases. There is not only the consideration of syllable emphasis, but also word meaning and subtleties of those meanings based on context that will also influence how, for example, the mouth moves in voicing a single note with a single word. At some level, I wonder if you almost have to be a singer, and understand the song in question, to meaningfully adjust parameters.

Of course, analyzing what you do with your voice, and translating that to Vocaloid controls, would be a challenge even at that stage. And perhaps something that could analyze the contour of a melody, and just assume there is good correspondence between the lyrics and the melody, might be better than nothing in terms of time savings.

It will definitely be interesting to see what you come up with in this. Good luck with it.

I like the song, Alexei, but I agree with Q when he says he can’t understand a single word. This really is the problem with Vocaloid. The pitch bends, etc work well. But vocaloid still sounds “throaty” and slightly metallic. Good luck with the project, I’ll keep my eye on your website.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Alexei

The dynamics you added to LEON sounds great (as usual with your products). :)

Using the NTONYX tools is a very fast experience a whole song with eg 10-15 midi instruments takes some seconds to tweak.

This will definitly save a loth of tweaking time. When it is possible to affect the other midi controllers (Resonances, Harmonics, Noise, Brightness, Clearness and Gender Factor) it will be awesome. Hopefully this will affect the understandability, some.

The are some words like “live” that must be upgraded by Zero-G also. ;)

I guess handeling the words must be treated on a DNA level by the Vocaloid to become more perfect.

Perhaps Melodyne technology can help?

Cheers
Bob

I just think Yamaha need to have some defaults set for new notes – something like tenuto accent and normal vibrato on every note. Then we could tweak from there. Don’t like the sound of a separate application frankly.
