Crescendo and Decrescendos question

I’m working on my first track (with Lola 1.1) so I’m using lots of bits I’m not familiar with.
On some of the longer words I’ve used a decrescendo to fade her voice and then I need to use a crescendo to get my “volume levels” back up.
It appears that the values used in these are relative values not absolutes – an example:
I put a decrescendo in on a word and edit it so that the values are from zero to minus 16. I would have thought that reversing this with a crescendo from minus 16 to zero would “reset” the volume level but it appears I have to have a crescendo from zero to plus 16.

Am I missing something or am I using them properly?
What do you experts do? Is there an easier way?

As an aside, this seems to me to be a useful way of automating volume mixing the track too, using these parameters. Again, what do you experts do please?
