Vocaloid 2 - when???

After many long hours working with Vocaloid 1 & 1.2 it’s great news to hear that version 2 is on it’s way! I hope the improvements are as good as they sound.
When will it be available please?
As it is version 2 does that mean that Vocaloid 1 owners will have to pay for the upgrade? If so, any idea how much?
Thanks.

Well I will tell you this much. There are exciting times ahead. Vocaloid 2 should be on the road to maturity going by this – and I have a feeling a breath feature has been added in this version, although I could be wrong?

Anyway so the quality has been improved alot. Well what alot of people did not realize – and I have only just worked this out myself is that vocaloid needs heavy use of external effect/chains and module appliance. Simply sticking chorus onto a vocaloid channel dont do much.

In vocaloid 1.1 you really have to dig to get convincing vocals. Alot of people miss out the programming and dynamics of the vocal components.

With that said – I discovered how getting a decent mastering package and clever use of chains can really bring vocaloid vocals to life.

What really makes a huge difference is this (I use Ableton Live as host)

EQ – (in Ableton EQ-EIGHT ‘Vocal OE’)
Reverb
Compressor ‘loud and punchy’ – (I use endorphin)
Izotope ozone 3 – mastering.

Well ozone offers many mastering presets, but with some tweaks the vocal presets are quite good. I was actually suprised how much a difference it makes to the vocaloid vocals. Okay so it still sounds a tad computer like – but even so a heck of a difference.

I’ll upload an example very soon.

In vocaloid 2 though, we might hit a sweet spot.

Nice to hear from someone who is using Vocaloid & believes in it’s potential. It’s hard work at the moment & I haven’t been able to get results that I would be able to play to other people without making apologies & explanations, but as a musician who hasn’t been blessed with a voice good enough to share with others it is a useful tool to see how the songs I write sound when at least sung in tune!

I am interested in your comments about hefty use of effects. I have found exactly the same thing & have spent lots of time trying various effects, I have found that it is a very hit and miss process to get a result. I have also found that after applying 4 or 5 different effects my cpu usage begins to peak & results in distortion.

At the moment I have settled on a vocal mastering suit called RSO (Recording School Online) Vocal Magic 2.3 + some reverb, which doesn’t seem to hammer the cpu usage & gives as good a result as several other effects. I am using Cubase SX by the way.

Hopefully when Vocaloid 2 arrives we won’t have to rely heavily on effects to get a realistic sounding vocal, or maybe we’ll have to wait for version 3? (I just hope it won’t be version 10!).

I am really interested to hear something you have done & hope you will upload one of your tracks soon. If you have time to check out my 2 tracks – “I Feel It” & “Prisoner of Love” – I would really appreciate your views, even if they are critical. I found I had to export them from Cubase at a lower resolution than they were recorded at, to keep them under the 4 MB upload limit, which was a bummer because the vocals, which are already not great, were further degraded. Ah well we can only make use of the tools at our disposal… at least us non singers have something to use at last!

I do believe in vocaloid, correct!

For the fact that the human voice is probably the hardest thing to model (due to the natural acoustics and expressions) vocaloid have done a brave and to some extent successful job at producing a product to output sung vocals. It’s a hell of a job, really – but there is room for huge improvement.

At the moment I’m using Miriam, and I must say ‘if I’m honest’ – it’s a tad too early in 1.1 to model on a real singer. I think Lola probably sounds more proficent since Miriam’s accent is not very well implemented IMO, although usable of course.

BUT, and it’s a very big BUT – I would love to see what version 2 brings, really. If a breath feature has been added then we really might be getting somewhere. Apparently it uses a different synthesis technique – and I’m also interested to see who the libraries come from.

I think with 1.1 you really had to work hard to get ‘that sound’ and it was not really ready for lead just yet. But I’m so confident and have no doubt that we really could be using something fairly well established and ‘ready’ soon. Let’s see.

lol I should not worry. I expect Zero-g will probably chip in although I’m suprised no other company has taken to the platform. Usually any news of new products emerges at NAMM and it hasn’t this year, just the happening of V2. These releases might be around May or during the later part of this year.

You never know though we may be suprised and various people might be keeping it secret until release!

I’m using Miriam and like th esound of the voice.

I don’t use the vocaloid for serious singing, just for background noice in instrumental music with occasionally a few lines of lyric.

I find that a little reverb and a +3db EQ lift in the highs is enough to get a nice natural result. My music is not suitable for compression.
I use Cubase and its components.

hehe so It’s best to put some pennies to one side then? 8)

I really can’t wait to hear the next release. It would be nice if the natural breathing feature has been added!
I’m part of the Zero-G Vocaloid2 development team.[/quote:2ck9qqqe]

Being in the most unusual position of having access to a developer I can’t help myself in aking questions/making coments

70% of men are colour blind – i find is dificult to see which ison is pressed in vocaloid 1.2.
I noticed that in V2 it is easier to see, but still not very good.

I would be nice to have continental phonetics added such as ‘ui’ in Dutch Huis
or ‘ou’ in Irish pronounciation of house.

Fl in Flow and Floating sounds like someone sitting on a joke air bag.

If would be nice if this time, any sample files will be accompanied with the midi files,
so that users can see how certain sounds have been produced.

It sound be nice to have a ‘tricks’ of the trade document to include thind like takong the first letter of the second word and adding it to the first word to improve pronounciation.

It would be nice if when activating the play loop, it will keep playing when adding /changing notes.

It would be nice to know the note range of the real singer (Miriam)

I am looking forward to using V2.

Sorry, but I could not help myself.

Blimey an expert in the forum! And there I was saying I don’t think Miriam was a tad ready yet – All in good spirit though me old mate! :P

I know and appreciate how hard it is to do the vocal platform, and since zero&crypton are the only offerings fair play to you ^^ :D

Can you please please please give us a little hint as to what we can expect in V2 quality wise? or least what the vocalists will be called (-:

I wont go into specifics regarding previous Vocaloid “singers” at the moment. We’re putting all our efforts into getting the new product as good as we can. However, once the new product is released, I’m happy to talk about previous products as well.[/color:2gnvmjrl]

It’s a little bit too early to get into details. What I can say is; the one I’m working on at the moment is called “Prima” and it’s a female voice <img class=” />
