Yesterday I purchased Prima with a view to using it as a realtime VSTi in Cubase 4 and these are my findings.

I had purchased Miriam in the past and was disappointed, I wondered if Prima would meet my needs better.

Initially I could not get Cubase to recognise the Vocaloid2 plug-in, I would load up a project and then set the plug-in path in devices but nothing showed up.This was remedied by opening Cubase and then setting the path before loading a project…weird but it worked.

Impressions on the GUI are that it looks very amateur and harks back to the sort of look you would expect on the old Amiga computers…having said that it does do it’s job.

I have been typing sentences in and playing them back immediately from the keyboard.

Pronunciation is better than I found with Miriam but still far from a native English tongue.

To me Prima sounds more Italian or Japanese than anything else, this is without any modification from me of the pronunciation…I will look into this later to see if improvements are possible.

Feeding the sound of Prima into a vocoder (V-Synth GT) provides a good source of choir phrasings and hiding the sound of Prima behind the vocoder choir is one way of masking out Prima’s ‘limitations’.

So to summarise if you need a source of vocalisation sounds in your music then Prima is easy to use and effective but don’t expect fluent English without some work and even then maybe this is still beyond the technology found in Prima.
