American English, California.

The Vocaloid phoneme chart lists the phoneme for that sound as OI.

It works, but it sounds a little off to me, not really like how anyone says it.

Yet, I cannot see a better way to make that sound.

Does anyone know of alternative ways to create that phonetic sound?

There is a very old 3-part tutorial in the tutorials section of this site, that shows how to adjust the vocaloid resonances (changing the pronunciation of vowels). I’m not sure whether it would help you with your particular problem, but it might be worth a look.
