Why can't I edit a Vocaloid midi file in Notepad? Or can I?

I opened a Vocaloid midi file in Notepad and did a “search and replace” of a commonly occurring phoneme…but then when I tried to open the file again in Vocaloid, nothing happened. So, I took another Vocaloid midi file, just opened and closed it in Notepad, without doing anything else, and the same thing again: Vocaloid didn’t reject the file in the sense I got no error messages, but there was nothing on the screen to be seen, either. In a number of other software environments I have been able to do text edits in Notepad without problem…why is it a problem here?

Any insights would be helpful, and if anybody has found a way to do Vocaloid edits in a text editor, please let me know how you did it!
